Moving always has its share of excitement and concerns, and when the weather doesn't cooperate, that adds another level of stress. Since you probably book your moving company well in advance of your moving day, the weather on your targeted day could be sunny and pleasant, rainy, or snowy and cold. You don't have to let bad weather ruin your moving experience if you're prepared for anything. Here are some tips for moving in bad weather.

Check The Weather Forecast In Advance

If you're moving in winter, you'll definitely want to keep your eye on incoming snowstorms. If it looks like you'll be hit with bad winter weather or a bad spring storm, call the movers and discuss the situation. They may need to postpone your move. Remember also that bad weather could strike while your belongings are on the road, and that could lead to delays in delivery.

When you're making plans to accommodate the weather, don't forget to check both locations since the weather could be beautiful where you live now but be bad at your new home when your delivery is due. Knowing in advance how the weather might be helps you plan for protecting your belongings and anticipating schedule adjustments.

Protect Your Belongings From Moisture

If it looks like it will rain or snow on moving day, figure out a way to keep your things dry so that you don't have to worry about ruining fabric items or wood. Using plastic totes is a good idea for some items since that protects them from getting wet. However, if all your things are packed in cardboard, then you may want to drape plastic sheets over the boxes as they are moved to the truck. You might even figure out a way to create a canopy with tarps or plastic sheeting to create a dry walkway from your house to the truck.

Keep Your Carpet Dry

If it's raining or snowing, the carpet in your home could get wet or muddy since there will be so much foot traffic going in and out of your home. You don't want to leave the carpet a wet mess for the new owners of your home, so cover the carpet with a waterproof tarp so that it stays clean and dry.

Be Patient

You'll probably be in a hurry and stressed out on moving day, but when the weather is bad, you need to have even more patience than usual. Be sure you're ready for the movers so that you don't hold up the loading process. Then, allow the movers to take their time so they won't fall on a slick driveway or have to be in cold temperatures for too long at a time. Cold weather can slow down the process, as can a sudden heavy rain. Try to stay calm and in a good mood because you can't do anything about the weather except adapt your schedule around it or wait for the weather to improve.
